The TAU protein is a set of six highly soluble protein isoforms by generating alternative splicing from the gene MAPT (microtubule-associated protein TAU protein). They have axons that mainly act to maintain stable microtubules and are in the central nervous system (CNS), which is abundant in neurons. They are less common elsewhere, but in CNS astrocytes and oligodendrocytes. Pathology of the nervous system and dementia, such as Alzheimer's disease and Parkinson's disease are related to TAU protein.
With signs of dementia, if clinicians find a combination of amyloid plaques and neurofibrillary tangles in the brain, then a clear diagnosis of Alzheimer’s disease can be made. Plaques are accumulations of amyloid peptides. The tangles are mainly composed of a protein called TAU. A key but difficult to detect difference in the form of the TAU protein can help scientists distinguish between those with no external signs of dementia and those with dementia.
